5:00 pm
it's 3 1/2 hours till game time and the tailgaters are already out there. to put that in perspective think back to 24 hours ago when if you'd asked those very same nats fans, they were a little worried. the strength of this team which had been its pitching when become the weakness. the st. louis cardinals' bats were on fire. they'd gotten beaten so badly tuesday night could. they come back? they weren't quite sure. then came jayson werth last night, a guy who some would say is the weakness for this team, paid so much money for him, hadn't produced like some hoped. he became the strength and now all the attitudes have changed now. everybody thinks the nats will do it tonight. there's only one game between them and the national league championship series. sitting here beside me is dave owens who can talk about just what this team has to go through to get to the other side of this game tonight. >> reporter: the one word that keeps coming to my mind is pressure. that's the thing and an old coach once told me it's one
5:01 pm
thing to do your job in a normal situation. it's another thing to do your job when it's pressure packed. it's win or go home tonight. we've heard it before. the nats haven't been through this before. the cardinals have. will that make a difference here tonight? i guess we'll have to wait and see. what we do know is washington proved last night they're not going to be an easy out here, but elimination games, they're a different animal. every mistake is magnified. game 167 will be something never experienced before by these nats and their fans. so are the nats ready? they say yes. >> these guys are pumped up, don't need no motivation. gio was telling me days ago we're going five, skip. don't worry about it. we're going five and he poked his head in and said what did i tell you? so these guys are all geared up. >> we know nothing is going to be easy. tomorrow is a new day whether we win or lose. now we have a heartbeat and
5:02 pm
come out tomorrow and anything can happen in that game. >> it's exciting. it's right where we want to be. i think being at homecoming back from a deficit 2-1 against a veteran club who has been in this situation before, you know, we couldn't ask for a better situation. i mean, yeah. anyone could sit here and say they would like a sweep, but at the end of the day we're in a great spot to win the series. >> reporter: here's the good news. they're sending gio gonzalez to the hill, 21-8 in the regular season, on full four days rest. so that's a good thing. >> reporter: he didn't look so good in game one. >> but he often comes back after a poor performance. >> reporter: we should note they will open the gates in about an hour to the stadium, 6 p.m. that's still 2 1/2 hours before game time, but our ken molestina is outside the gate right now and he says there's already fans showing up clamoring to get in. >> reporter: these are the die hards, a different they're showing up still about another hour for the gates to open. they're bearing this chilly
5:03 pm
weather out here, but you know what? it may be coal, but the vibe is definitely red hot -- cold, but the vibe is definitely red hot. look behind me. this is the center field gate. these people are donning their jackets and nats regalia and have their gloves on. the game doesn't start for a couple hours, but these are the few people that have gotten out of work early and come over here and stand by and get ready to get inside this stadium. want to show you wharf will be receiving at the -- what everybody will be receiving at the game tonight. this is what it's all about. make sure that i have it up right here, natitude. that's what it's all. about these are the rally towels they're giving out to all the fans in attendance at the stadium tonight. so if you're coming out here, you can expect to have this, wave it around all night. i can tell you natitude is alive and well on hatch street, back to you. >> reporter: thank you, ken before. you can get out there and wait in line to get in the gate and enjoy the game, you have to get
5:04 pm
your hands on one of those golden tickets, right? they weren't easy to come by. a lot of folks lined up early this morning for a last chance. >> this is about as good as it gets. now everything is on the line in game five. more than 200 nats fans were camped outside the box office this morning hoping to score last minute standing room only tickets to game five. what time did you get out here? >> 3:00 in the morning. >> reporter: shut up. >> no. i came straight from work. >> reporter: you watched the game from work and came straight here? >> there was no way you could not come. >> that was probably the loudest i've ever heard in d.c. sports. that's the most people i've ever hugged. >> it was one of the best ballgames i've ever seen. >> reporter: how pumped are you for tonight's game? >> i'm really looking forward to it. we're ready to go. >> fans are going to go crazy. >> reporter: how much would i have to pay you to get that ticket from you? >> not for sale. >> going to be pretty hard to pry them out of my hands.
5:05 pm
>> i don't think you can. this is a game after last night i'm expecting this crowd to be crazy and the nats are going to come through. they've been doing it all year winning in weird and different ways and i think this team is destined to win. >> reporter: if you want to come but didn't want to wait, you can get tickets online on sites like stubhub.com. it's just going to cost you. standing room only tickets normally cost 30 bucks, but now they're going for three times face value. at nats fish i'm kristin fisher -- nats park i'm kristin fisher, 9 news now. >> reporter: metro has decided to postpone track work before the game tonight just to make sure everybody gets home and back. that track work had been scheduled for 10 p.m. with single tracking on multiple lines. instead it will not get going until the crowds have all dissipated and gone home. who knows? if it goes to extra innings, how late that might be and if it's late, it's going to be bitterly cold, right, top? >> it is, derek, but you are
5:06 pm
really cold, 30 below really? >> reporter: that was just exaggeration for effect. >> i see. if you do go to the game, either the nats game or high school football, here's the forecast. i would recommend gloves. i know that sounds crazy, but i'd recommend gloves and also a hat. plan for the 40s and 50s tonight if you're going out. winds will slowly diminish, but we're still looking otter 40s to low 50s, clear, no rain and winds 10 to 15 throughout the game. our coldest night so far. we have freeze warnings for montgomery county and loudoun county north and west which includes prince william county and fauquier county. fairfax is under a frost advisory for some reason. prince george's county is under a frost advisory and frost advisory goes down to culpeper and fredericksburg in spotsylvania county and culpepper county. so a cold night ahead. we have to have these winds diminish before temps fall. winds are gusting to 24 miles per hour downtown, a wind advisory on the bay bridge this
5:07 pm
hour. we'll come back and talk about how low it's going tonight and take you all the way through the weekend. we have new information in a story we've been tracking on 9news. criminal charges have been filed against a maryland teen accused of attacking a classmate who was being interviewed by a news crew at the time. the subject of that interview, bullying. a portion of the attack was caught on tape. scott broom is in brunswick, maryland, with the latest twist in this. >> reporter: a 15-year-old student at brunswick high school has been charged with second degree assault after thisalleged video attack. the individual of kid who claims to be a victim of systemic bullying will be the guest of honor tonight at an alternative homecoming dance. the video shows two kids approaching and then 15-year- old preston deener being chased after allegedly being assaulted by one of the boys while standing for an interview with whag television, an interview about being bullied. deener spoke with 9news shortly
5:08 pm
after the alleged assaulted. >> i got pushed into a pole and i pushed them back and then he hit me in the head. >> reporter: one of the teens seen in the video has been charged as a juvenile by the frederick county sheriff's department with second degree assault. deener's mother was in tears monday calling for action. >> what is it going to take? somebody will get really hurt. >> reporter: deener took his complaints about bullying public after being suspended for fighting. he claims he was standing up for himself for the first time after years of harassment and was being punished unfairly. after charges in the case today schoolmates at brunswick high have opinions all over the map. >> i guess charging him was the right thing to do. >> i think it's kind of crazy that one fern should go down for the whole thing even though everyone -- person should go down for the whole thing even though everyone picks on him. >> reporter: everyone picks on him? >> a lot of people. >> they're putting too much attention on preston because he's not the only person getting bullied, like i used to
5:09 pm
get bullied and i started to feel like i learned how to stand up for myself and i feel preston should do the same thing. >> reporter: deener is getting all kinds of support on facebook and tonight his family and supporters will be hosting him at an alternative homecoming dance. among the guests expected? the president of frederick county's board of commissioners and school administrators. ad brunswick high school scott broom, 9 news now -- at brunswick high school, scott broom, 9 news now. an update on the 4-year-old who fell out a ninth floor window in silver spring. that young boy is in critical condition at children's national medical center. the child plunged 80 feet from the apartment building on pipy branch road yesterday afternoon. detect -- piney branch road yesterday afternoon. detectives are investigating how this accident happened. a d.c. judge ordered two suspec held without bail in that brutal capitol hill beating and armed robbery of a young father. he said he could find no circumstances under which it would be safe to release the defendants back into the community pending trial. bruce leshan reports the
5:10 pm
victim's shaken wife was watching in the courtroom. >> reporter: abbey maslin said she wanted to come here and stare down the men who nearly killed her husband, the men who nearly took him from his 2-year- old son jack, the men who left him unable to walk or to feed himself or even to speak her name. >> i want to look them in the eye and i want them to know who i am and what they've done. >> reporter: and so abbey maslin came to the courtroom, sat in the second row, stared at the men with her head in her hands as they were led into the courtroom. at one point she grimaced. her mother-in-law put her arm around her, rubbed her back. it was clearly agony. >> they have created just a tremendous hole in my heart and their damage is going to be, you know, permanent damage. >> reporter: abbey maslin was too shaken to talk at the courthouse, but she spoke at a community meeting the night
5:11 pm
before. >> he's making amazing progress. he is an incredible man and he is very strong and he's lucky to be alive. >> reporter: we now have new details about what the suspects allegedly did to the young father in this pocket park on that warm night back in august. tommy branch allegedly hit him with a baseball bat. sunny kuti allegedly smacked him in the face with a fake em out beebee gun and michael moore pushed him and he hit his head on the ground. bruce leshan, 9 news now. >> 17-year-old sunny kuti put his hands together and seemed to pray during the hearing, but the suspects never seemed to look back at abbey maslin. a former prince george's county school bus driver was sentenced to 10 years in prison today for deliberately crashing a bus into an employee lounge. theresa douglas was in namejoy. investigators say the 41-year- old used the bus to get revenge
5:12 pm
on a co-worker who wasn't even in the lounge. the crash happened last december. in announcing the sentence state's attorney angela alsobrooks said that this crime is the definition of absurd, her words. all but five years of the prison sentence have been suspended. coming up an entire continent wins the nobel peace prize. >> but first the candidates head back to the campaign trail after last night's spirited vice presidential debate. we'll break it down.
5:13 pm
5:14 pm
the candidates for vice president are both claiming victory after their one and only debate. >> i felt great about it. >> republican congressman paul ryan took his family to breakfast in lexington, kentucky, this morning. later this hour he will join his running mate mitt romney at a campaign stop in pennsylvania.
5:15 pm
president obama says he's proud of vice president biden's debate performance. a cbs news poll taken right after the debate of undecided voters thought 50% thought biden won. mitt romney and president obama will square off again next tuesday in a town hall style debate in new york. bob schieffer, the hose of cbs news' face the nation, will moderate the october 22nd debate in florida. he joins us now live from washington. because you're moderating the debate, we understand you won't talk about the debate directly, but where do you see the presidential race with two debates now in the book? >> well, i think it's closer than it was and i will say this about last night's debate. i think both of the candidates helped themselves. i think as far as the debate itself, i think joe biden probably won, but i tell you
5:16 pm
the other part. i thought that paul ryan kind of passed the vice presidential test. i don't think anybody -- this will be people who vote for mitt romney and people who vote against him, but i don't think you'll find people who will vote against the republican ticket because paul ryan is on it. the last time out there is no question that there were some people and i don't know how many, but there were some who did not vote for john mccain because he had put sarah palin on the ticket. i think paul ryan showed last night that he was a person of substance and a serious person and there's argument about this, about who won. i think he did pass that test. i think the other part of it is these debates are really helping us to see the contrast between these two parties and the positions that they're taking. there's a contrast and i think so far they've been very good. >> let's talk about who is coming on the show because while you can't talk a ton
5:17 pm
about the debates, you sure will have a lot of people who will. >> you know, we're going to be talking about something that was a big subject last night and that is this ongoing situation in libya and what actually happened there and why was it the administration was so reluctant to say this was a terrorist attack? are they trying to play down the fact that there are still terrorists in libya and maybe the situation there is worse than we thought it was? at any rate, we're going to talk to somebody who has been to libya a lot in the past couple of years and that is senator lindsey graham who is on the armed services committee in the senate. i want to see what he thinks. he's been there many times and i want to see his take on what he thinks was happening out there. also representative darrell issa who is leading that congressional investigation into what actually happened in libya and also representative elijah cummings who is the ranking democrat on that committee.
5:18 pm
it's a very serious situation there. if we lost four americans who were kill -- we lost four americans who were killed in that episode including the u.s. ambassador. so i think we need to go deeper and see what exactly we can find out about what really happened there. i hope we'll break some new ground sunday. >> all right, bob. we'll be watching you and your guests on face the nation sunday. millions of people will be sharing this year's nobel peace prize. the nobel committee honored the 27 nation european union for its role in building peace and reconciliation among enemies, this as europe continues to deal with an economic crisis. the head of the committee suggested that the root of europe's current economic crisis was the financial collapse in the u.s. he said it started with lehman brothers.
5:19 pm
we need to about be wearing a scarf, gloves and hat. >> especially derek is cold. >> he always complains. >> we are looking at the coldest night of the season. the wins win -- winds have to die down before we make these temperatures. live weather cam brought to you by michael and son, just gorgeous, temperatures falling now, back to the upper 50s. the dew points are falling. that's a very good case of how cold it can get at night. right now the dew point downtown is 34. it was in the upper 30s a couple hours ago. winds are north, northwest at 15 and the pressure is rising 30.29 inches of mercury. when the sun goes down and these winds taper off, temps will fall very quickly. 55 in great falls and vienna, 56 in fairfax and burke and bethesda, 60 in college park, but 58 in bowie and 55 out toward laytonsville and past
5:20 pm
olney. cover your plants tonight. dress for the 40s and 50s in you're headed out, cool, nice saturday, a very nice day saturday, breezy and warmer sunday and warm, but unsettled monday. i think the warmth will make up for the chance of showers. clear and colder tonight, frost or freeze possible, winds diminishing, lows 30 to 42. winds will become east, northeast at 5 to 10. if you're inside the beltway, you're looking at temperatures in the upper 30s to around 40, 32 in fairfax and rockville and college park 33 or 34. they expanded the frost advisories to include the district and prince george's county and points south and west. again, that is for tonight. next three days code green, cool but nice tomorrow, 62, warmer sunday, partly cloudy, 75, great day for the redskins and for the ravens. both are playing at home. a shower possible on monday, but still pretty warning temperatures in the mid- to
5:21 pm
upper 70s, no complaints there. next seven days we're looking at temperatures actually kind of staying fairly mild, a little cooler tuesday with temps going back to the mid- 60s. then they bounce back up, 70 wednesday, a few showers thursday night, better chance for showers friday with highs in the mid-60s. so if you head out tonight, hat and gloves may look silly at first, but you'll thank me. >> all right. coming up the federal government launches investigations into problems with two vehicles made by two different automakers. we'll bring you that consumer alert up next.
5:22 pm
5:23 pm
5:24 pm
in tonight's consumer alert two federal investigations into some cars and a break on air fare for now. first a steering problem in some 2011 hyundai santa fe suvs is prompting concerns. a fastener can come loose and cause the steering shaft to come apart. this affects about 70,000 vehicles. and then there's a safety issue with the brakes on the 2005 honda pilot suv. they can engage even if you aren't stepping on the pedal. 88,000 pilots are sort of rounded up in that
5:25 pm
investigation. no injuries or crashes have been linked to either vehicle for either issue and the search continues to figure out whether the problem with both suvs are bad enough to be recalled. prices to fly will stay grounded for now. united tried to increase them and then delta followed with a $4 to $10 hike on u.s. flights, but there weren't very many other carriers that were going to raise the flight prices, too. airlines have tried 12 times this year to charge us more, but it only works four times and typically they abandon those higher fares when their competitors don't match them. thousands of people in washington and across the nation created a sea of pink today. they're taking part in the susan g. komen three-day walk to kickoff today. it's a 60-mile long journey to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. the d.c. area walk started early this morning at the armory and it ends sunday at
5:26 pm
the washington monument. wusa9 was honored last night with its top sponsor award at the ninth annual stars and stripes fundraiser for u.s. on metro. channel 9's former president and general manager accepted the award. the uso is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting american troops and their families at home and around the world. coming up a police officer has two separate congressional candidates or rather i should say last night two separate congressional candidates almost came to blows during a debate. we'll take you there. >> they have the best record in baseball, but in the postseason it's been trouble that a lot of people expected. before game five we talk to some experts that can probably tell us why. that's up next.
5:27 pm
5:28 pm
5:29 pm
en the at bat after the rain -- remember the at bat after the rain delay? >> i do. >> remember what happened culminating that at bat? >> do. >> wouldn't that be nice. >> three balls, two strikes, the pitch, deep left field, going, going and gone! it's the game winning run for jayson werth and the nationals have won the game 2-1!
5:30 pm
unbelievable! >> it was the home run heard all across washington d.c. heck, maybe across the nation and nearly 24 hours later the radio call of last night's nationals' win still resonates in the heads and hearts of nationals fans and joining us now, the two men who made that radio call, charlie and dave, glad to have you with us. thanks for coming down. when you're in the booth making a call like that, tell me what your reaction that was we couldn't see. >> well, we both jump up out of our seats and because of the way it happened i ran over trying to get a high five or like a little fist pump from dave, but i think i grabbed his arm and then i can't tell you if he was hugging me or trying to push me away. >> i got to give charlie credit because right before the pitch where werth hit the home run, charlie basically summoned the home run. he referred to the at bat here in september when jayson werth
5:31 pm
hit a home run after a rain delay and he referenced that right before the pitch happened when jason hit the home run. i was just stunned that he did that and basically he summoned that home run. >> reporter: it's almost like he pointed at the fence and called it. >> he called the shot. >> reporter: how much faith did you guys have that this was going to happen? a lot of nats fans were down after the game tuesday night. did you still think in your heart of hearts that they had a shot? >> well, it all comes down to the starting pitcher giving you a chance and ross detwiler was terrific over six innings, pitched the game of his life when he needed to pitch it and then jordan zimmerman came in, pitched the 7th inning, 12 pitches, strikes out, showing emotions. when he's the starting pitcher, he's pumping his pitch and tyler clippard and drew storen were even better after that. >> reporter: what is it like in postseason that makes it so much harder? now we're getting the star spangled banner here, but what happened in the postseason that
5:32 pm
seems to make it tougher? this is the best team in baseball all season long and this postseason has really been a struggle. >> it seems like everything is magnified. of walk could be rain. every mistake you make on defense could lead for take run. every mistake you make on offense takes away a run. everything is magnified and you're talking about confidence going into game four, there's no carryover. once game three is over, there's no carry jove. you could say nationals have the -- carryover. you could say nationals have the momentum, but you don't know. that's why we're all here to watch. >> reporter: that's why we play the game, as they say. thank you guys. we appreciate your time and look forward to hearing you make another heroic call tonight. lesli, back to you. >> thank you, derek and friends. both democrats and republicans are talking about last night's vice presidential
5:33 pm
debate, both campaigns hoping to seize momentum provided by vice president joe biden and congressman paul ryan, but the debates threw new questions about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. we have usa politics editor paul singer. we were talking before the debate started and you were saying biden would have to defend foreign policy especially after loss of life in benghazi. >> yeah. there have been congressional hearings this week and there are still evolving questions about what happened there. until we get them out of it, they'll continue. >> let's listen to fall brian's specific attack on the president. >> when you take a look at what has happened in the last few weeks, they sent the u. in the ambassador out to say that this was because of a protest in a youtube video. it took the president two weeks to acknowledge this was a terrorist attack. >> now is that misleading? did it take the president two weeks to acknowledge this was a
5:34 pm
terror attack planned on the anniversary of 9/11? >> no. the president said pretty much in an immediate response this has been an act of terror. what has taken the president two weeks to explain is exactly what happened. there was first the president saying it was about this video. it was a protest in response to this video that was then hijacked by terrorists. that appears now to not be true. the president was not and has not been able to give a complete description of events but he was talking about this as a terror attack pretty much immediately. >> biden was saying ryan, everything you're saying was inaccurate, in fact, calling it marlakey. let's listen to biden's response to some of those claims. >> i will be very specific. no. 1, this lecture on ambassador security, the congressman here cut embassy security in his budget by $300 million below what we asked for, no. 1. so much for the embassy security piece.
5:35 pm
>> okay. did congressman ryan's budget specificically cut embassy security by $300 million? >> no. congressman ryan's budget proposed a 19 or 20% across the board cut for everything that is not the defense department. these guys did the math and said well, let's see, $1.5 billion, security minus 20%, that's a $300 million cut, but it was never in the budget that way. it is simply that's the extrapolation the democrats are making to say well, obviously everybody program we can take off 20% and say that's what you were going to cut. >> the issue of embassy security did come up and that there were repeated requests for more security in libya. let's listen to biden's response to that. >> at the time we were told -- we said exactly what the intelligence community told us that they knew. that was the assessment and as
5:36 pm
the intelligence community changed their view we made it clear they changed their view. >> i'm even hearing new statements about this. county administration say they didn't know that there were requests for more security? >> well, can joe biden say he didn't know? possibly. that's basically today's version of the story is well, you know, we had never heard that the president and the vice president never directly heard about this, but, in fact, there are memos out there from the embassy asking for more security and support. now the other argument is oh, yeah, but that was the embassy in tripoli or somewhere else. it wasn't the benghazi embassy. the benghazi embassy was actually attached to a cia compound. there's a whole bunch of questions. again, until we get to the bottom of this whole story, these questions will continue to play out because the administration doesn't have a straight solid stand still answer. >> and americans died. >> americans died there. >> paul singer from usa today politics editor helping us through this entire election season. there were more than just nasty words exchanged at a
5:37 pm
congressional debate in california. the debate between two veteran democrats turned physical. the two congressmen, bradsher man and howard berman got a little too close yesterday, both competing to win control of the same district due to california's new primary system. during the exchange sherman grabbed berman's shoulder and yanked him toward his chest shouting, "you want to get into this? " an officer approaches to keep the two apart and the l.a. times captured the whole thing on video. coming up next a thief caught on tape setting a bad example for the little girl walking out right behind her. >> and don't forget we're always on www.wusa9.com. stay with us. we're back with you right after the break.
5:38 pm
5:39 pm
5:40 pm
caught on tape a woman stealing a one of a kind wedding dress with a little girl following right behind her. there she is. the video is from a surveillance camera taken outside the store in new jersey september 8th. police say eight phoney customers came into the store as decoys asking to try to gowns. while the workers searched the rack for sizes the thief took out right out the front door
5:41 pm
with the dress and a little girl following behind. visitors have gotten several tips about the thief's identity, pretty clear what she look like. so far no arrests have been made. here's a question. what do police do when they find bomb making material inside a california home? >> what else? they blow them up. there it is. the fbi and local officers responded to an east vallejo neighborhood after reports a man had been making and exploding small bombs at a home there. the man surrendered and bomb disposal teams gathered and detonated the explosives found in the home. that's what it produced. neighbors say the man is a squatter who increasingly became more dangerous. >> not even his house and he's got explosives in it. fans are sure hoping for some fireworks tonight down at nationals park. >> dave owens is down there where the anticipation is building. dave. >> reporter: hey, what's up, ladies? the anticipation is building and the players are out on the field right now. there they are.
5:42 pm
they're getting ready to go, game five. you've heard all the cliches. there is no tomorrow. backs are against the wall. how many more times can we say it? county nats knock one out of the park tonight -- can the nats knock one out of the park tonight? we will see coming up. >> reporter: the space shuttle endeavour takes its final mission through the streets of los angeles. i'm that story coming up.
5:43 pm
5:44 pm
5:45 pm
space shuttle endeavour's final journey won't be through space. as bigad shaban reports, instead it's taking to the streets of los angeles. >> reporter: thousands of people are lined up for the biggest show in los angeles this weekend, the space shuttle endeavour's retirement road trip. 66-year-old jan gonder got her at 6 a.m. >> it's like a dream. >> reporter: a big crowd gathered in the middle of the night as the shuttle was slowly hauled on a special carrier from l.a.x. to the city streets. the 167,000-pound spaceship is heading to its last stop, the california science center. moving at 2 miles per hour endeavour should finish the
5:46 pm
trip late saturday night. the flatbed is not controlled with a steering wheel. it's operated with joysticks. the transporter's wheels can move in any direction. >> it's an engineering marvel. >> reporter: endeavour flew 25 missions, more than 123 million- miles in space before it was retired with the rest of the shuttle program last year and the final 12-mile trip through the city is no easy mission. more than a dozen agencies are involved from police to power companies. crews took down trees and traffic signals and utility lines, so the shuttle's five- story tail could move through. the streets are reinforced with steel plates so the shuttle and its heavy carrier don't crack underground pipes. residents will have to put up with traffic jams and temporary power outages before endeavour reaches its final destination. bigad shaban, cbs news, los angeles. >> the estimated cost of moving the shuttle across town is more than $10 million.
5:47 pm
